Your Child’s First Dentist Visit—A Calm Parent’s Checklist
Positive early experiences build lifelong habits. Here’s how to make that first appointment smooth and stress-free.
When to Book
At the first tooth—or by their first birthday. Early visits spot issues before they start.
What Happens
A gentle look at teeth and gums, brushing advice, diet tips, and (when suitable) fluoride varnish to strengthen enamel.
Parent Prep
• Read a fun “going to the dentist” story.
• Bring a favourite toy.
• Schedule when your child is well-rested and fed.
Home Habits
Brush twice daily with a smear of fluoride toothpaste, limit frequent sugary snacks/drinks, and use open cups instead of bottles by 12 months.
Make Visits a Routine
Most children do well with check-ups every 6 months; your dentist will advise.
