Teeth Feel “Gappy” After a Scale & Polish? Here’s Why

By 16 June 2026No Comments

It’s a common post-cleaning comment:
“I swear my teeth feel like they have bigger gaps now!”

This can feel surprising, but in most cases it’s completely normal—and actually a good sign that your teeth and gums are healthier.

The Real Reason: Tartar Was Filling the Space

Tartar (hardened plaque) builds up around the gumline and between teeth. Over time it can act like a “filler”, making spaces feel tighter than they really are. When a hygienist removes tartar, your teeth may feel:

* smoother
* cleaner
* slightly more “spaced”

But that’s simply your teeth returning to their natural shape.

Why Gums Can Look Different After Cleaning

If gums were inflamed, they may be swollen. Once plaque and tartar are removed, gums can settle and reduce swelling—making spaces look more visible. This is often an improvement in gum health, not damage.

What’s Normal vs What’s Not

Normal after a clean:

* mild sensitivity for 24–48 hours
* gums that feel “lighter” or less puffy
* teeth feeling smoother or slightly more spaced

Book a review if you notice:

* persistent bleeding beyond a few days
* ongoing pain or swelling
* loose teeth
* sharp sensitivity that doesn’t improve

How to Keep the “Just Cleaned” Feeling Longer

* Clean between teeth daily (floss or interdental brushes)
* Brush gently with a soft brush
* Avoid smoking/vaping
* Book hygiene every 3–6 months (as advised)
